The San Diego Chargers and Tennessee Titans meet Saturday for preseason ball at Nissan Stadium.
The San Diego Chargers hope to excite the fan base with a good preseason showing after being a flat out mess the last two years. The Chargers have some added excitement on the offensive side of the ball with the addition of wide receiver Travis Benjamin and rookie tight end Hunter Henry. Backup quarterback wise, Kellen Clemens, Zach Mettenberger and Mike Bercovici will fight to be the second guy behind pro bowler Philip Rivers. Defensively, the San Diego Chargers rookie Joey Bosa is likely going to earn a starting role on the line and linebacker Joshua Perry has a chance to earn considerable playing time with the second unit.
The Tennessee Titans haven’t made the playoffs since 2008 but have some nice young players to be thrilled about. Rookie Jack Conklin may be the starting right tackle for Tennessee and quarterback Marcus Mariota may get more reps than usual due to him still being a little wet behind the ears entering his second season. Former Dallas Cowboy Matt Cassel and young journeyman Alex Tanney will split the reps for the second quarterback spot. Defensively, the Tennessee Titans are set with their starting unit but have a lot of rookies fighting for backup roles, including Kevin Dodd, Kevin Byard, Kalan Reed and Austin Johnson.
The Chargers are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Titans are 16-33-3 ATS in their last 52 home games and 15-35-4 ATS in their last 54 games overall. The Chargers are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 meetings in Tennessee.
The Chargers have an older starting unit, so you're likely going to see backups very early in this game. The Titans are younger and may play much of the first quarter or so. Also, having Cassel at backup is huge. He may noe have done much against starters last year, but he should be able to feast on the Chargers backups.
Give me the Titans and small line.
