NFL | Denver Broncos (5-11) at Washington Redskins (7-9)
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

On Friday from FedExField, we’ve got a fun NFL preseason matchup coming as the Denver Broncos visit the Washington Redskins.

The Broncos enter this season coming off a 5-11 mark in 2017, which left them in the basement of the AFC West. Denver suffered an eight-game losing streak during the year, which was their longest since 1967.

So far this preseason, the Broncos have lost 42-28 to the Vikings and 24-23 to the Bears. In that Chicago game, Denver’s leading passer was Chad Kelly, who went 7-of-9 for 90 yards and one touchdown. Royce Freeman added another rushing touchdown to the Broncos’ final tally.

Over on the Redskins’ side, they’re coming off a 7-9 record last year and a third-place NFC East finish. Washington started out at 2-2, but then lost seven of the final twelve games thanks to a difficult schedule and a host of injuries at notable spots.

The Redskins fell to the Patriots 26-17 in their preseason opener this season, then edged out the Jets 15-13 in Week 2. In the New York matchup, Redskins QB Colt McCoy passed for 140 yards and a pick, while Alex Smith was 4-of-6 for 48 yards.

The Broncos are 5-15-1 ATS in their last 21 games on grass and 2-10 ATS in their last 12 games overall. Denver is 1-9 ATS in their last 10 road games and the under is 5-2 in their last seven games overall.

Meanwhile, the under is 4-0 in the Redskins’ last four games overall and 7-3 in their last 10 home games. The over is 20-8 in the Redskins’ last 28 games on grass and the over is 5-2 in the last seven head-to-head matchups between these two teams.

The third preseason game is always the most interesting to watch, as we should get plenty of snaps out of the starters. I’d imagine Smith will test drive the Redskins offense early and we could see some nice dink-and-dunk plays during long downfield drives. I think the Redskins have fewer question marks at their key positions so I’m taking them for the cover here.

Pick:
Washington Redskins -3
