The Line: Washington Redskins -2 -- Over/Under: 37
Headed our way on Thursday in Week 2 NFL Preseason action, the New York Jets will be visiting the Washington Redskins.
The Jets are coming off a disappointing season in 2017, starting out at 3-2 but ultimately finishing at 5-11 and in last place in the AFC East. It was the seventh consecutive season New York has missed the playoffs.
The Jets have some reasons for optimism this season, however. In the first preseason game versus the Falcons on Friday, New York took a 17-0 victory. Rookie QB Sam Darnold looked impressive, going 13-for-18 for 96 yards and a TD.
Over on the Redskins’ side, they’re coming off a 7-9 season in 2017, finishing third in the NFC East. Adding to the dismay heading into this season is the loss of rookie RB Derrius Guice to a torn ACL.
In their first preseason game, the Redskins blew a 17-point lead to the Patriots and would lose 26-17. QB Colt McCoy looked solid in that one, with a 13-of-18 line for 189 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Jets are 4-1 ATS in their last five Thursday games and 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall. New York is 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine road games and 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 games on grass.
Meanwhile, the under is 4-0 in the Redskins’ last four games overall and 7-3 in their last 10 home games. The over is 6-1 in the Redskins’ last seven Thursday games and 20-8 in their last 28 games on grass.
It’s tough to tell what to expect by preseason performances alone, but both these teams have some reasons for optimism heading into the season. I expect New York to roll with Teddy Bridgewater at QB for a little longer this time (he played very well in the opener) to see what they have in him. With Darnold coming along behind Bridgewater, I have to go with the Jets here.
