The Calgary Flames head into Anaheim with an upset in mind while the Ducks look to build on their Pacific division lead.
The Flames are bound for an underwhelming season when it comes to the Western Conference playoff picture as they simply don’t have the roster necessary to complete for the Stanley Cup but they do have a nice core of players that will set the structure for the next few seasons. Calgary has one of the best youngsters in the game in Sean Monahan who they drafted with the 7th overall pick in last year’s draft as well as an emerging goaltender in Reto Berra who despite starting the year in the AHL has emerged as the team’s number one option. Calgary will look for just their ninth win in 25 tries tonight and it won’t be easy as they take on a Duck team who has yet to lose at home in regulation this season. Berra will get the call as he goes up against Jonas Hiller of the Ducks.
Anaheim dropped their last contest and as the large majority of them have been so far this season it came on the road as the Ducks have just one loss at the Honda Center this season and it came via the shootout. Ryan Getzlaf continues to prove his worth as not only the team captain but as one of the best players in the world and his stock has certainly risen with the Olympics approaching and I think he is a certainty to make the Canadian team. The Ducks are very well balanced and can adjust their game plan based on the dictation of their opponents which is something not a lot of teams can say. However, I am a little cautious of taking the Ducks as big favourites especially when they play a scrappy team like Calgary who can come away with a win if they get good goaltending. While he hasn’t put up the win totals I have been very impressed with the way Berra has played this season and I think the Flames can escape with a huge win here at a ridiculous price.
