The Capitals look to shake off a 3-1 loss in Los Angeles last night as they continue their California road trip in Anaheim against the Ducks.
The Capitals have split their three game California road trip so far as they took down the Sharks but lost to the Kings in LA last night and will look to head out on a high note by taking down one of the league's best teams. Washington has enjoyed a nice resurgence this season and have looked as good as any in the last month or so but they are quickly falling out of the race to finish in the top three spots in the Metro division and may be on the outside looking in when it comes to the wild card spots in the East if they're not careful. The Caps currently hold down the upper of the two wild card spots which would in turn set them up for a first round matchup against the New York Islanders if the season ended today but with plenty of action left in the regular season there is much to be determined and if the Caps go on a run they could very well win the Metro division outright.
The Ducks have been on cruise control in the Pacific division for the last month or so and haven't really been challenged to lose their division lead since December but they are still chasing the Preds for the league's best record and the right to home ice advantage throughout the playoffs. Anaheim is a very deep team and while they are without Frederik Andersen who is on the injured reserve they have youngster John Gibson suiting up who was brilliant in last year's playoffs and could be the answer long term if he can get into a groove and a matchup against a Caps team in a back to back could be the opportunity he is waiting for. This game marks another Bruce Boudreau affair against his former team and you can bet his guys would love to get him a victory here and with the possibility of Holtby being on the bench this one could get ugly.
