The Capitals and Ducks meet up in Anaheim on Monday night in a battle of league heavyweights that could serve as a Stanley Cup preview.
The Washington Capitals head into California on Monday night looking to continue their impressive season against a Ducks side that has been red hot as winners of 11 in a row that head led to their overthrow in the Pacific division. The Capitals though have been the team to beat since the puck dropped back in October and with 100 points through their first 65 games they are head and shoulders above the rest in the race for the top mark in the regular season. However, as we have seen in year’s past with this Caps side, they will only be gauged on their playoff performance and with their track record being what it is it is reasonable for skeptics to doubt the Caps until proven otherwise. Braden Holtby is expected to get the call as he will likely face off against rookie sensation John Gibson.
The Anaheim Ducks have ripped off 11 straight victories and have gone from the league’s biggest underachiever to a Cup contender over the last few months and have taken over the Pacific division lead. Anaheim though still needs to find a way to generate more consistent offensive opportunities as they’ll need to find a way to compete with some of the best in the West come playoff time. The Ducks though have done it with defense and goaltending all season and if they’re going to slow down Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals they will have to have one of their best games of the season. Unfortunately, winning 12 straight games in the NHL is incredibly tough and with the Caps having the league’s best record I will take them at plus money any time of the week.
