The Anaheim Ducks and the Arizona Coyotes meet in NHL action from the Gila River Arena on Thursday night.
The Anaheim Ducks will look to build some momentum after picking up a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators in their last outing. Ryan Getzlaf opened the scoring just 3:39 into the game before Jakob Silfverberg doubled the advantage just after the midway point of the opening frame. Daniel Sprong pushed the lead to 3-0 with the lone goal of the 2nd period. Nashville cut the deficit down to one goal with a pair of goals :58 apart late in the 3rd, but it was too little too late as Anaheim held on for a rare victory. John Gibson got the win to improve to 20-21-8 after stopping 32 of 34 shots faced in the winning effort.
The Arizona Coyotes will look to continue their playoff push after picking up a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues in their last outing. The game was scoreless through the opening period before Richard Panik broke the deadlock with the lone goal of the 2nd period just 1:05 into the frame. Vinnie Hinostroza doubled the advantage :23 into the 3rd period, and the score would hold through most of the 3rd before St. Louis pulled a goal back with 1:11 to go. Oliver Ekman-Larsson would close the door on any Blues comeback with an empty-netter late in the 3rd period. Darcy Kuemper got the win to improve to 23-16-5 after stopping 39 of 40 shots faced in the winning effort.
Anaheim is 9-27 in their last 36 games overall and 2-9 in their last 11 road games while the under is 38-12-3 in their last 53 division games. Arizona is 9-2 in their last 11 games overall and 5-1 in their last 6 division games while the under is 11-4-1 in their last 16 home games. Anaheim is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings between these two teams and 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Arizona.
The Ducks have had a lot of success against Arizona and could make up some ground in the wild card race with a win here. However, a lot of that success came when Anaheim was the team playing better hockey, and right now, that isn’t the case. Arizona has finally forced their way into a playoff spot, and I don’t think the Coyotes will want that stay to be short-lived. Given the way these two teams have been trending as of late, I think Arizona and the reasonable price is the way to go here.
