The Gila River Arena and the Arizona Coyotes host the New Jersey Devils in NHL hockey action on Friday.
The New Jersey Devils have been in a long funk so facing the struggling Colorado Avalanche seemed like the perfect opportunity to break in to the win column and grab some momentum. That was the plan but plans don’t always work out as the Avalanche picked up a 3-2 decision for back to back wins to improve to 19-44-3. Francois Beauchemin was he Avs offensive star with his goal with just 1:14 remaining to avoid overtime with Rene Bourque and Nathan MacKinnon also scoring to make a winner of Calvin Pickard. The Devils offense came off the sticks of Taylor Hall and Stefan Noesen while Corey Schneider absorbed the loss on 19 saves as New Jersey has now lost nine in a row.
The Arizona Coyotes knew they had to be at their best to beat the surging Ottawa Senators on Thursday. I’d say the Coyotes did play as well as possible but it still wasn’t enough as the Senators pulled out a 3-2, overtime win to send the fans at the Gila River Arena home with disappointment. Captain Erik Karlsson gave the Senators a pair of goals and a helper with Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scoring. Karlsson’s second tally came a mere 40 ticks in to the extra session and made a winner of Mike Condon and his monster 39 saves as the Senators have won five in a row. The Coyotes received goals from Lawson Crouse and Brendan Perlini while Mike Smith stopped 28 shots as Arizona has dropped four of five.
The Devils are 0-5 in their last 5 games playing on 1 days rest and the over is 1-0-3 in Devils last 4 vs. a team with a losing record while the Devils are 0-5 in their last 5 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game. The under is 4-0-1 in Coyotes last 5 home games and the under is 3-0-2 in Coyotes last 5 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 while the under is 3-0-2 in Coyotes last 5 vs. a team with a winning % below .400. The Devils are 5-0 in the last 5 meetings and the home team is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.
I feel that I must bring up that these teams have a combined four wins in 20 contests so that screams stay away. No goalies have been confirmed so right now my lean is New Jersey…
