It was a different type of win than we're used to seeing from the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night but it helped propel them to a 3-0 record to start the year. Colorado rode their defense and goaltending to a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs and if they can play that type of game with some consistency they've got enough offensive talent to potentially make some noise. It was a brutal season for them last year but they've got so much young skill up front that they could really make a quick turnaround if they can figure out how to play in their own end and support one another. Patrick Roy is a loose cannon behind the bench but the guy knew what he was doing coaching in junior hockey and just might have what it takes to be a legitimate bench boss in the NHL. Cory Sarich's first period goal tied the game with Toronto 1-1 and P.A. Parenteau broke the tie early in the third to give the Avalanche the win. Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves in the victory. Now all they've got to do is follow it up against the Boston Bruins.
Boston has been off since Saturday's 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings, a lengthy break for a club that has come out to start the season firing on all cylinders. They've outscored their two opponents by a score of 7-2 and this new blend with Louis Eriksson looks very good so far. Torey Krug, Brad Marchand, Jordan Caron, and Zdeno Chara all scored for the Bruins who outshot the Red Wings 37-26 for the game and really controlled play all night long. They set the tone with a dominant first period and despite being tied after 20 minutes it was clear which team was asserting themselves. The Avalanche have gotten off to a great start but this is going to be a true measuring stick on Thursday night.
