The Red Wings and Bruins meet in Boston on Monday as two of the best in the East do battle in what could be a preview of the Conference finals in a couple months’ time.
The Red Wings come into Monday afternoon’s affair with the Bruins sporting a 3-2 record through their first five contests and they’ll to double up on that mark with a pivotal early season encounter with the Bruins. Detroit is a revamped bunch after landing two of the more coveted free agents on the market in the offseason as they brought in Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss and so far the addition of the two veterans has been a great move as they’re contributing both on and off the ice. Jimmy Howard has been solid to start the year once again for the Wings and he will have to be in fine form once again if the Wings want to hold off the Bruins who are a very dangerous team at home. The Wings have split their two contests on the road this season while the Bruins are 2-1 at home.
Boston serves as the Eastern Conference favourite by many this season after losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Blackhawks in game six of last year’s Stanley Cup finals but the Wings and a handful of others will have something to say about that before the season is through. The Bruins acquired Jarome Iginla and Loui Eriksson in the offseason, two huge additions to the Boston attack and they will be called upon to provide some secondary scoring to a very well balanced offense. Boston is no slouch defensively either as they are anchored by Zdeno Chara, and their goaltending is spectacular as Tuukka Rask begins his second full season as the team’s starter. These two teams are a lot closer than the line indicates here but I do think they Bruins have a slight edge in terms of offensive depth and I see that being the difference here. However, both teams will play a physical game and each net minder has the talent to steal the game so for that reason I am on the under in this contest as the best bet.
