There hasn't been a bigger surprise to start the hockey season than the Colorado Avalanche. Everyone knew they were loaded with some talented, young offensive forwards. The question was whether or not their defense and goaltending would be good enough to win on a consistent basis. Thus far they've gotten Vezina caliber play in net from Semyon Varlamov and Patrick Roy has this club believing that it can win every night out there. They finally dropped their first game of the season on Thursday night against the Detroit Red Wings but it doesn't change how well this team has been playing. Unfortunatley it's been just the opposite for the Buffalo Sabres. After finally picking up their first win of the year against the New York Islanders in a shootout they followed it up with a poor performance at home against the Vancouver Canucks. It was a 3-0 shutout and another game where Ryan Miller did everything he could but didn't get any offensive support. With all the trade rumors swirling and Miller and Thomas Vanek basically knowing they'll be gone at some point, this is going to be a long season in Buffalo.
