The Line: Buffalo Sabres +109 / Florida Panthers -120 --- Over/Under: 5.5
The Florida Panthers travel to the KeyBank Center to take the ice with the Buffalo Sabres in Monday night NHL hockey action.
The Florida Panthers are fighting for their playoff lives and every point is a necessity with time running out on their season. That being said, the Panthers played one of their best and more complete games in downing the powerhouse Chicago Blackhawks 7-0 on Saturday night. The Potent offense of the Blackhawks was silenced and the defense was shredded with Corey Crawford allowing four goals before Scott Darling came on in relief and was charged with three goals. The Hawks have now won six of eight and still lead the Western Conference. The Panthers saw Jonathan Marchessault record his first career hat trick with Alexander Barkov, Reilly Smith, Nick Bjugstad and Jonathan Huberdeau also scoring to help James Reimer to his first shutout of the year.
The Buffalo Sabres are probably not done rebuilding but they have proven to be an improved club and certainly are not the pushover they once were. The Toronto Maple Leafs will agree with this assessment after they were humbled by the Sabres 5-2 Saturday at the KeyBank Center. The loss was especially painful with number one goalie Frederik Andersen leaving after the first period with an upper body injury with Curtis McElhiney coming in for the Leafs. Andersen allowed two goals on 16 shots with McElhinney giving up three on 19 shots which sealed Toronto’s fate with Auston Matthews and Connor Brown being the only offense. The Sabres attack produced two goals from Jack Eichel with Ryan O’Reilly, Evander Kane and Dmitry Kulikov also lighting the lamp. Robin Lehner gave Buffalo a strong effort in the nets with 32 stops and shutout the leafs over the final two frames.
The under is 3-0-1 in Panthers last 4 road games vs. a team with a losing home record and the under is 7-0-1 in Panthers last 8 when their opponent scores 5 goals or more in their previous game while the under is 5-1-2 in Panthers last 8 road games. The Sabres are 0-4 in their last 4 after scoring 5 goals or more in their previous game and the under is 3-0-1 in Sabres last 4 Monday games while the under is 3-0-1 in Sabres last 4 games following a win. The Panthers are 11-3 in the last 14 meetings and the Panthers are 7-2 in the last 9 meetings in Buffalo while the over is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings.
The Panthers have played well versus the Sabres regardless of the venue and the over has done okay. I lean to the playoff hopeful Panthers with goalies pending…
