The Canadiens look to rebound after a 4-1 loss against the Panthers in their last outing as they head into Buffalo to take on the Sabres.
The Montreal Canadiens have had a very tough season and things will likely culminate without a berth in the Eastern Conference playoffs as they sit nine points behind the Red Wings for the final wild card spot and only have 12 games to make up ground. The Canadiens are well clear of the league’s worst mark though as they sit 11 points up on the Maple Leafs but for a team that was atop the Eastern Conference standings after a month and one that was expected to contend for a Stanley Cup they have fallen well short of expectations. The absence of Carey Price ahs certainly played a factor but the bottom line remains that Montreal just hasn’t been good enough this season to warrant a playoff berth and they head into Buffalo to face off against a Sabres side looking to pull to within three points of them in the standings.
The Sabres have been a different team since Robin Lehner came off the shelf and heading into this game tonight they are 4-4-2 in their last 10 contests but have looked very competitive and could very well finish the season above the .500 mark. Buffalo was expected to struggle again this season after sporting the league’s worst mark last year but they have shown signs of improvement and with their young core intact and the potential for another on the way in this year’s draft this will be a good team for many years to come. The Sabres haven’t been good at home this year but Montreal has been horrid on the road and while Montreal has the better chance at a playoff berth I do think the Sabres get the win on home ice.
