The Pittsburgh Penguins look to stay red hot as they head into Buffalo to take on a slumping Sabres side whose playoffs hopes look razor thin.
The Penguins head into Buffalo on Thursday night looking to chase down the Islanders and Capitals for top spot in the Metro division and with a victory they can move into a tie with the Islanders for 2nd place. Pittsburgh is coming off a victory in their last outing and they are 5-1 in their last 6 games overall and have had a ton of success playing in Buffalo as they are 8-2 in their last 10 trips to the KeyBank Center and the odds makers are expecting another easy outing here for the visitors. The Pens are 4-0 in their last 4 games as a favorite and are 16-6 in their last 22 contests against a team with a losing record and the favorite is 22-8 in the last 30 meetings between these two sides, with most of those outings going in Pittsburgh’s favor.
The Sabres meanwhile started the season as one of the league’s hottest teams and look as though they were going to be a dark horse in the Eastern Conference but they have really fallen off since the turn of the calendar are likely to finish on the outside looking in. Buffalo comes into Thursday night’s action sitting 12 points back of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with just 12 games remaining on their schedule and at this point they are looking like they are more likely to land a nice draft pick instead of getting into the postseason. A victory here would be a huge swing in momentum but the Sabres are winless in their last 4 games as an underdog and are 2-6-2 in their last 10 games overall.
The Penguins are 5-1 in their last 6 games against the Eastern Conference and 14-6 in their last 20 games playing with a day of rest while the Sabres are 8-20 in their last 28 games against the East and 7-19 in their last 26 games overall. Pittsburgh is a heavy favorite here and they haven’t been the same team we have been used to seeing but the Sabres are in trouble and the Pens leave with a comfortable win on Thursday.
