The Leafs and Sabres finish out their woeful seasons over the next two weeks and meet up in Buffalo on Wednesday night.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been one of the league's biggest disappointments this season and have a very different look to them then what was in place in October but they have actually started to play well over the last two games and are thriving in the spoiler role. The Buds have won two games in a row with wins over the Sens and Lightning, both of which were at the ACC, and now head into enemy territory to take on the Sabres in a game that always draws a large turnout regardless of where each team sits in the standings. The Leafs are trying players out at different spots and with different linemates as they prepare for next season while the Sabres have been a tire fire all season and are going all in on the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.
The Sabres sit in dead last in the league standings and for how bad they have been from start to finish this season it is surprising to me that they are only four points worse than the Arizona Coyotes. Buffalo anticipated a futile season but there is reason for optimism as they have some great young pieces already waiting in the wings and barring a disaster they should land McDavid as well which would go a long way to not only restoring the talent level to the Sabres but it would be a franchise defining moment and give the team a new sense of identity and ideally bring in a whole new demographic of Buffalo Sabres hockey fans. However, that is still a few months away and to ensure that happens I think the Sabres mail it in and the Buds play for a little bit of dignity and they get it here.
