Finally the Buffalo Sabres are in the win column after failing in their first seven attempts to start the season. It didn't come easy however, as they were forced to go to a shootout in New York against the Islanders. Thomas Vanek and Tyler Ennis scored in the skills competition and Ryan Miller shut the door as the Sabres defeated the Islanders 4-3. Ennis and Vanek both also scored in the second period for Buffalo but it was Marcu Foligno with the biggest goal of the night coming with just over two minutes remaining in regulation to knot the score at 3-3. Miller finished the night with 41 saves and he really gave his club a chance to hang around in this one. Now they'll have to host a Vancouver Canucks club that's coming off a win of their own on Tuesday night in Philadelphia. The Canucks got a huge break in this with as Ryan Kesler scored a goal that was the result of the puck taking a bad bounce off the end boards that left the net wide open. Kesler had two goals on the night and Chris Higgins also scored for Vancouver who got 20 saves from Roberto Luongo on the night. These are the types of games on a lengthy road trip that can give teams trouble because sometimes it's hard to get up for them against a bad team. Still, the Canucks are much better than the Sabres and if they're focused they should find a way to win this one.
