The Capitals look to win their second game in as many nights and chip away at the Pens for third place in the Metro as they head into Buffalo to take on the Sabres.
The Capitals got a much needed win at home against the Boston Bruins on Sunday in a show down between the two occupants of the Eastern Conference wild card spots and now the Caps can make a push at cracking the divisional playoffs and set up a more favorable matchup in the first round. Washington heads into action on Monday sitting four points back of the Pens for third place and just six back of the Isles for second and with two weeks left of the regular season you can bet Barry Trotz and his crew will buckle down and make a charge towards the teams in front of them. Washington has an impressive +33 goal differential which is attributed to their total team game and the underrated effort of Braden Holtby this season and if this team can continue to play well into the playoffs they could very well go on a run that nobody is expecting.
The Sabres meanwhile have been eliminated from contention since Halloween and while the future is bright and could get a lot brighter with either McDavid or Eichel on the horizon it still has been a draining season for the Upstate New Yorkers. Buffalo sits in last place in the NHL with 44 points and an absolutely absurd -101 goal differential and going up against a team in the Caps who despite playing in a back to back will be energized for victory as they can sense the playoffs in the air. Washington should have no trouble here despite being a much better home team than road team and with the Sabres being putrid across the board this should be an easy spot for a hungry team.
