NHL action comes to the Scotiabank Saddledome where the Calgary Flames host the Anaheim Ducks.
The Anaheim Ducks have struggled to put things together for much of the first half of the season but have ‘healed’ a bit and they have been playing their best hockey. Anaheim had won five of six before their offense cooled off in a 2-1, shootout defeat at the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. The Oilers drew first blood at 11:58 of the second period on a Kris Russell tally on assists from Connor McDavid and Milan Lucic.
Anaheim evened the score just 18 seconds in to the third period on a power play goal off the stick of Ryan Kessler with assists going to Jakob Silfverberg and Cam Fowler. Mike Cammalleri and Ryan Nuggent-Hopkins scored the in the shootout and Cam Talbot stopped 33 shots to get the two points for Edmonton. John Gibson stopped 33 shots to salvage a point for the Ducks.
The Calgary Flames need points to position themselves for a run at the postseason which has a habit of sneaking up on teams. Calgary has picked up five points in three games after defeating the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 on Thursday. Tanner Pearson led Los Angeles with a pair of goals with Derek Forbort also lighting the lamp.
The balanced Flames offense saw four different players score with Michael Ferland, Sean Monahan, Troy Brouwer and Mark Jankowski all found the back of the net. Johnny Gaudreau also logged a pair of helpers to lift Mike Smith to the win with 28 stops while Jonathan Quick recorded 37 saves.
Under is 6-1 in Ducks last 7 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game and Ducks are 5-1 in their last 6 games playing on 1 days rest and under is 4-1 in Ducks last 5 vs. Pacific. Under is 6-1 in Flames last 7 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game and under is 4-1 in Flames last 5 when their opponent scores 2 goals or less in their previous game and Flames are 2-6 in their last 8 games playing on 1 days rest. Ducks are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Calgary and under is 4-1-2 in the last 7 meetings and Ducks are 39-12 in the last 51 meetings.
Anaheim has enjoyed the bulk of the success in this matchup and the way the team has been playing has me looking their way.
