The Coyotes head into Calgary to complete their Alberta road trip after a battle with the Edmonton Oilers last night.
The Arizona Coyotes seem to have their way with the Edmonton Oilers and at the time of writing they are once again up on their Western Conference rivals by a 2-1 score line in what has always been sight on the calendar for the Coyotes regardless of if the game is in Edmonton or Phoenix. Arizona will look to play tough in their second game in as many nights as they head into Calgary to take on the surprising Flames who have won 7 of their last 10 contests and are in third place in the Pacific division. Arizona is 9-12-3 heading into Monday night's action and to me are one of the weaker overall teams in the NHL and should very well be drafting with a top five selection come July and for a franchise that has been in disarray for some time off the ice I think it is time they get someone they can lean on on the ice by selecting a franchise caliber talent which this draft class is stacked with near the top. Devan Dubnyk is expected to get the call in goal for Arizona in this one.
The Flames have been the feel good story of the season so far as a team many had pegged finishing near the bottom of the Western Conference standings has soared near the top of the Pacific division sitting in third place. Calgary is a pretty young squad with some of their integral pieces being in their first and second seasons in the NHL and while adding another piece via the draft may have been a smart move long term it looks like the Flames are keen on proving the doubters wrong this season and good on them for doing so. Calgary has one of the best defensive pairings in hockey with TJ Brodie and Mark Giordano lighting it up and both goaltenders in Karri Ramo and Jonas Hiller have been solid and with the former likely get the nod in this one against Arizona. The Flames are favoured here and the line could move depending on the outcome in Arizona's game against Edmonton but nonetheless I love Calgary here as these Western Canada road trips are tough and playing in back to back nights isn't easy whoever you are and I think Calgary gets to Dubnyk early and often – something they have been doing for years to the former Oiler.
