The Sabres look for a rare road victory in Calgary on Tuesday night as both teams play out the string on their regular seasons.
The Sabres head into Calgary looking for just their eighth victory away from home and their 20th win overall but will have to do so with a rookie goaltender in net as Nathan Lieuwen makes his NHL debut. Buffalo is in shambles and they are a lock to draft with the first overall selection in July’s draft and while the talent from that selection will surely make the team better they are going to go through some rough times in the process. The Sabres are in the league basement by a comfortable 11 points and are 15 points back of the Flames heading into this contest and with just 14 games remaining in their season Buffalo will look to play the spoiler role for teams aspiring to reach the playoffs. Lieuwen will go up against Joni Ortio who is playing in his eighth game of the season and despite sitting with a 3-4 record so far he has actually played quite well.
The Flames look to build some momentum for their offseason haul by finishing out the year on a winning note and with the Sabres in town tonight we are likely to see Calgary as heavily favoured as they have been all season. The Flames are going through a rebuild on the fans knew coming in that this one going to be a tough season but they have actually surpassed most of the expectations place don them despite sitting in second to last in the Western Conference. Sean Monahan would have been a shoe in for the Calder Trophy had he not gotten hurt but his play this year has to give Flames fans something to be excited about as he will certainly be a special player. There isn’t much to delve into here as I think the Flames are the better team overall and should have some confidence playing against the league bottom feeders.
