The Hurricanes look to shake off Tuesday night’s loss to the Oilers as they head to Southern Alberta to take on the Calgary Flames.
Carolina was in the midst of their best hockey of the season until they flew West to take on the Vancouver Canucks who dealt the Canes a harsh reality which they ultimately couldn’t overcome against the Oilers. The Canes do have some talent in the form of Eric and Jordan Staal, and youngster Jeff Skinner but I think they are a couple of pieces away from returning to the playoffs despite sitting in a comfortable place in the underachieving Metropolitan division. The Canes fought back from a two goal deficit to force overtime in Edmonton which did earn them a point but they had no business in that contest and they need to refocus here heading into Calgary. Cam Ward is expected to start while Kari Ramo goes for the Flames.
The Flames have been surprising people with their play this season but Tuesday night marked the return of a Calgary legend whose departure has led to the overhaul going on with the franchise. Jarome Iginla was traded to the Penguins at last year’s trade deadline and then signed with the Bruins in the offseason and made his triumphant return to Calgary in his new digs to the delight of many at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Unfortunately for the Flames it was the Bruins who used a third period burst to skate away victorious but you can’t deny the Flames were playing inspired hockey. While I am a little nervous this will be an emotional vacuum in comparison to the Bruins game I still think the Flames have the edge here and that is where I will be siding here.
