The Detroit Red Wings and the Calgary Flames meet in NHL action from the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday night.
The Detroit Red Wings come into this game looking to build on back-to-back wins after a 3-1 victory over Anaheim in their last outing. The game was a scoreless tie through the opening period before Anaheim broke the deadlock just after the midway point of the 2nd period. Detroit finally broke through in the 3rd period, with Anthony Mantha tying the game 5:25 into the period before Gustav Nyquist took the lead for Detroit with 4:16 to go and Darren Helm added an insurance marker just 1:43 later to secure the win for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard got the win to improve to 13-12-5 this season after stopping 23 of 24 shots faced in the winning effort.
The Calgary Flames will be looking for a bounce-back performance after a 4-3 overtime loss to Buffalo in their last outing. Johnny Gaudreau scored in the final second of the opening period to give Calgary a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play before Buffalo scored the lone goal of the 2nd to head to the 3rd period tied at 1-1. Matthew Tkachuk gave Calgary the lead, but the advantage lasted all of :45 before the game was all square again. Buffalo took their first lead of the game just 3:22 after that, but Noah Hanifin would tie the game at 3-3 just :42 later, sending us to overtime. The extra frame lasted all of 1:10 before Jack Eichel scored to give Buffalo the win on the road and send the Flames home with just a single point. David Rittich took the loss, falling to 17-4-4 after allowing all 4 goals on 23 shots faced in the losing effort.
Detroit is 16-36 in their last 52 road games and 22-46 in their last 68 games overall while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games following a win. Calgary is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall and 4-1 in their last 5 home games while the over is 7-1 in their last 8 games against the Eastern Conference. Detroit is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 2-5 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Calgary.
Detroit and the heavy plus money is tempting after back-to-back wins, however we can’t forget that this is a Red Wings team that’s won just 4 games in the last 5 weeks. Calgary burned me against Buffalo, but the fact is that the Flames are heads and shoulders the better team here, and should be able to get another win against a Red Wings team that they’ve had lots of success against in recent years. I’ll side with the Flames to get the win and even though it burned me against the Sabres, I’ll back Calgary on the puck line to try to cut down on the heavy juice here.
