The Line: Calgary Flames +119 / Detroit Red Wings -131 --- Over/Under: 5.5
The Red Wings look to win their second game in a row and their eighth of the season as they take on the Flames in Calgary.
Detroit improved their road record to 4-2-2 on the year in their last outing and they’ll look to keep moving as they take on the pesky Calgary Flames at the Saddledome on Friday night. The Wings were picked by many to finish at or near the top of the Eastern Conference standings this season and while they have looked the part at times this year they still have some growing to do as some of their new players continue to get acclimated. Jimmy Howard sports a .500 record at the moment but his play between the pipes will largely determine how far the Wings go this season and in tonight’s matchup he should give the Wings the edge as Calgary turns to journeyman Joey Macdonald. The Wings have a nice balance of veteran leadership and young talent which is a model the Flames are looking to emulate but might take a few seasons of rebuilding before they can catch up.
Calgary was projected to finish near the bottom of the standings this year and compete for one of the top three draft picks as they lost a ton of talent form last year but so far they have been a team on a mission looking for something to prove. The Flames sit at 5-5-2 on the year which doesn’t have them sitting pretty in their division but they are at a respectable spot at the moment and if the likes of Sean Monahan – the rookie sensation and others can continue to put the puck in the net they should be able to finish better than anticipated. While the Wings are the favourite here as they should be I think the game will be closer than people expect and while I am not willing quite yet to lay it down with Calgary in this spot I do see some goals being scored as both goalies have been suspect and I think the offenses will take over here.
