The Panthers head into Calgary on Friday night looking to pull off the minor upset as both teams look to continue their charge towards a playoff berth.
The Florida Panthers at the time of writing are 18 minutes away from upending the Vancouver Canucks in what is Roberto Luongo's return to his former arena and as we discussed yesterday it was likely to be a marquee effort from the former Canucks net minder and so far it has been. The Panthers head into Calgary on Friday looking for another victory this time at the expense of the Flames who like the Panthers this season have been a pleasant surprise. The Panthers sit in fifth place in the Atlantic division but have three games in hand on the Maple Leafs and four on the Boston Bruins so they could very well make up some ground in those contests and perhaps make an unprecedented return to the postseason as early as this year. Al Montoya is likely to get the start as he will go up against Jonas Hiller for Calgary.
The Flames have been so up and down over the last month or so as they were the hottest team in the league in late November before a double digit slide had them plummeting and now they are trading wins and losses with back to back games resulting in no points. Calgary is an interesting team as I don't think they are as bad as they're playing at the moment but I don't think they are as good as their record indicated after the first six weeks and now that balance is finally starting to restore. Jonas Hiller has been good since coming over from Anaheim and he will face off against Al Montoya here who I think could and should be a starter in this league and serving in a back up role I think he will relish every opportunity he gets. I like the Panthers to win their second in as many nights with a big effort here against Calgary.
