Perhaps a coaching change is exactly what the Florida Panthers needed to wake them up. Sometimes a move like that doens't do anything and sometimes a coaching change can really light a fire under a team. For the Panthers it appears to be the latter and this hockey club is finally showing that they do have some talent and pride. Florida has won three of their last four hockey games and the Panthers have picked up wins over some pretty good clubs in the process. The Panthers defeated the Anaheim Ducks, one of the best teams in the NHL, 3-2 last Tuesday on home ice. It was that victory over the Ducks that seemed to really give the Panthers a lift they desperately needed. They fell 3-2 to the Minnesota Wild but followed that up with consecutive wins over the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks. Those are three very good hockey clubs right now and for the Panthers to take two of the three down on the road is really saying something. It's always easy to sit back and take shots at a team like Florida but right now you've got to give them their due. The Panthers are really playing like a team an they're going out and competing with any opponent they face. Friday night will be tough for them against the Calgary because they'll be coming off of a back to back but at least we know the Panthers are giving effort now.
Calgary just can't get out of their own way and things just keep getting worse. The Flames have lost seven of their last eight games, dropping their record to 7-11-4 after a very good start to the season. Calgary's been giving up a lot of goals as of late which is what makes their most recent defeat against the Columbus Blue Jackets that much more depressing. The Flames got a strong goaltending effort from Reto Berra but it wasn't enough as the Flames fell in overtime by a final of 2-1. Even when the Flames do something right they still can't find a win as of late. This is a spot for them to really unleash some of their anger because they've got Florida Panthers team on a long road trip playing the second night of a back to back. If the Flames can't get a win in this one on Friday then it's hard to see them getting many any time soon.
