Things haven't quite gone the New Jersey Devils way this season but despite the record they've put some good stretches of hockey together. Right now the biggest issue for this club is consistency but with some older, veteran players and a goaltending tandem that doesn't look like it's going to sort itself out anytime soon it might stay that way for a while. For the second straight game the Devils blew a multiple goal lead as they lost 3-2 to the Vancouver Canucks. This came a night after blowing a 3-0 lead in Edmonton. New Jersey is now 0-1-3 on the year and really struggling to get their footing. Cory Schneider took the loss, allowing three goals on 32 shots with Jason Garrison beating him in overtime for the winner. It won't get any easier as they'll have to take on a red hot Calgary Flames club on Friday night.
The Flames are one of the biggest surprise stories early on in the league. Obviously the keyword there is early, but Calgary has come out of the gates playing some solid hockey. They're just 2-0-2 but it's the way that they've played that has been impressive. Sean Monahan scored another goal in their 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night and Joey MacDonald had a strong game as well, stopping 33 of the 35 shots he faced. I'm still not a believer in MacDonald and this team should still struggle immensely at times this season but at least for the first time in a long time there's something to look forward to for Flames fans. This is a game that will be a tough test for them against a Devils club that should come out hard but if Calgary is patient they should be able to take advantage of some New Jersey mistakes.
