The Islanders head west and enter the Saddledome as they take on the Flames in Calgary on Thursday night.
The New York Islanders look to build on their 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild in their last outing and take down their third opponent in a row tonight as they take on a Flames side that is quickly falling out of the playoff race in the Western Conference. New York has been knocking on the door for the last few seasons but they haven’t been able to cultivate a sustained playoff run and while they sit in third place in the Metro and are in a nice spot to qualify once again they will have to get through the Rangers and Capitals. New York is expected to turn to Jaroslav Halak between the pipes in this one as they look to improve to 14-11-3 on the road as they will take on either Jonas Hiller or Joni Ortio in the Flames goal who are looking for their 18th win of the season at home.
The Flames sit in second to last place in the Pacific division and are third to last in the Western Conference this season and with 23 games remaining and a substantial deficit to overcome it doesn’t look like they will follow up last year’s playoff berth with another. Calgary was expected to do some great things this season but we have to remember that their team is still quite young and most of their building blocks are their most inexperienced players and last season was a bit of an overachievement and this is precisely where the Flames should be at this stage in their rebuild. With that being said though, they always seem to get up for the home crowd and while New York is coming off a big win against Minnesota I like the price here on the home side.
