The Sabres look to respond after an ugly loss at home last night as they take on the road to face off against the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Sabres had all the makings of pulling off an upset against the high octane Anaheim Ducks on home ice last night but instead the 2013-14 bottom feeders played like such and were waxed by a 6-1 final. It is clear that Buffalo is still a ways away from being competitive and until they bring in some other pieces or develop from within they are going to be in the running for another top end draft pick, though that could be a blessing in disguise for them as next year’s draft class is loaded. Buffalo has yet to win a game this season and are a -10 in terms of goal differential which is astonishing through just three games and things don’t appear to be getting any easier as they play in the Atlantic division where some of the game’s best goal scorers reside. The Sabres head into Carolina to take on the Hurricanes who also have yet to win a game but at least the Canes have been competitive, something that very few people thought would happen with this bunch this season.
The Hurricanes are in line for a very long season as they simply don’t have the roster to compete in the Eastern Conference and with injury concerns to Jeff Skinner and playing concerns with Cam Ward it just spells a disastrous recipe for the once perennial Eastern Conference contenders. Carolina does play in the Metro division so they do have a bit of leeway in terms of gaining points as to me it is the least competitive of the four in the NHL and while it is loaded at the top I think the Canes could very well avoid the basement if they can string together some respectable hockey this season. While we may not say this a bunch this season I think this is a decent spot here for Carolina as they get the Sabres at home while coming off a game last night against a powerful Ducks team and I think we see an inspired effort from the home side who should get the two points here.
