The Wings look to finish the regular season on a winning note and generate momentum heading into their 24th straight playoff berth.
The Detroit Red Wings continued their incredible streak of playoff qualification as they earned a point in an overtime loss against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday to lock up their 24th straight appearance which is far and away the longest active streak in sports. Detroit though srtill runs the risk of slipping into a wild card spot if they lose against the Canes and the Senators get a victory over the Flyers which would set up a tough first round against the winner of their division which is still up in the air between the Canadiens and Lightning. The Wings still have somne of the usual suspects in Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, and Jimmy Howard but they are a completely revamped team from the late 2000's that had a ton of success and while this group has the potential to do some damage they just don't seem to have the same tenacity as in year's past.
The Hurricanes have had another disappointing year and some of their promising stars in Jeff Skinner and Jordan Staal have particularly taken this year hard as their personal accomplishments have dwindled and their skill sets called into question. Carolina sits in third to last place in the Eastern Conference and will finish at best 23 points back of a wild card spot which will force them back to the drawing board in the off season and leave them with plenty of options at the draft in July as the top 10 picks are all very solid. The Canes have been a tough out over the last few weeks and will want to play well in their season finale but against a Wings team still playing for playoff positioning I think they will come out on the losing end here.
