The Carolina Hurricanes play in their season opener on Saturday night as they welcome the Minnesota Wild to town on Saturday night.
The Wild fell flat in their season opener against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night and will be out for redemption as they stay on the road on Saturday, this time in Raleigh against the Hurricanes. Minnesota started the season as one of the league’s best teams last year before a dismal final stretch that led to another early playoff exit but they have the personnel to go on a playoff run and are in the conversation as one of the top teams in the Western Conference. Minnesota has a pretty solid top six in terms of forwards and a very good top four defensemen that ranks them among the league’s best and if Devan Dubnyk can regain his midseason form from a season ago they are definitely a team to watch out for in the Central division.
The Hurricanes meanwhile are a tough team to sort out as they have a young core of high end prospects that make them an intriguing team in the Metro division but at the moment they still look like they are a piece or two away from competing. Carolina did make a decent run towards a playoff spot a season ago and have another offseason under their belt and with some of the other teams in the Metro perhaps due for a regression this could be a Canes team making a push forward and a win at home against the Wild would give them some confidence.
The Wild are 1-5 in their last six overall and 2-7 in their last nine against the East while the Canes are 1-5 in their last six overall as well and 2-7 in their last nine against the Central. Minnesota didn’t look great against a thin Wings team and I fully expect them to bounce back here against Carolina.
