The Hurricanes look to shake off a shootout loss against the Penguins at home last night as they stay in Raleigh to battle the Islanders on Saturday night.
The New York Islanders head into Carolina on Saturday looking to distance themselves from the Penguins in the Metro division and move closer to locking up a playoff berth but face off against a Canes team that is still in the mix as well and has played well at home this season. The Isles are a nice team with plenty of pieces that should get them into the postseason but I expect they will in the market to add a piece or two as there seems to be something missing and unless they can fill the void I think their stay in the postseason could be short lived. Jaroslav Halak is expected to get the call as the Isles are 11-10-3 on the road this season while the Canes will counter with Eddie Lack who aims to improve Carolina’s home mark to 13-9-6.
The Hurricanes weren’t expected to be in the mix for a playoff spot this season as many thought they would be in the running for another top end draft pick and while there is still time left to be played they do have a shot at proving the skeptics wrong with just under 30 games remaining. The Canes though could fall victim to the trade deadline as some key pieces are expected to be on the move and that could derail their shot at grabbing a wild card spot and force them into thinking long term a little earlier than expected. With that being said, the Canes are a scrappy bunch and getting value at home against a division rival is a price I am happy to take.
