The Carolina Hurricanes look to snap out of their late season home funk as they welcome the Ottawa Senators to town on Monday.
The Senators continue their final stretch of the season on the road in Carolina on Monday night in what has certainly been one of the biggest disappointments of the season as they have gone from within a goal of the Stanley Cup final to one of the league’s worst teams in less than a calendar year. Ottawa is 18-40 in their last 58 games overall and have been beaten up by everyone in the league this season, including those teams with a losing record who have laid waste to the Sens to the tune of a 26-9 stretch in the last 35 games. Ottawa has really struggled against the Canes in Raleigh as they are 2-15 in their last 17 trips and with the way they have been playing of late it wouldn’t be of any surprise to see that trend continue here against a desperate Carolina side.
The Hurricanes meanwhile have had no tourble beating up on teams with a losing record this season but the problem for them lies in the games against fellow playoff hopefuls and with just seven games left in their regular season and a nine point gap to make up the Canes know they need a miracle. Carolina is sitting right around where projections had them in the preseason as they are a good team but not a great one and a few bounces that went against them instead of in their favour could ultimately be the difference in them making the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, and at the moment it looks as though they are going to fall short.
The Senators are 1-5 in their last six playing on one day’s rest and 1-11 in their last 12 games playing against a team with a losing home record while the Canes are 4-11 in their last 15 games against the East and 1-4 in their last five home games. Ottawa is terrible and while Carolina looks as though they will fall short of the postseason they will give it their all beginning with a win here.
