The Sharks look to shake off a tough loss in Pittsburgh last night as they head into Carolina to face the surging Hurricanes.
The Sharks were set up for arguably their biggest game of the season but they came out and laid an egg against the East leading Penguins in what was supposed to be a showdown of two of the best teams in the league. San Jose gave up the first four goals of the game before Tomas Hertl got the visitors on the board but they ultimately dropped a 5-1 decision in what was one of their worst outings of the year. Luckily for them though they get to shake off the loss and regroup for Friday night’s encounter with the Hurricanes who are coming off an impressive victory in Nashville last night. This match is slated to be Antii Niemi against Cam Ward but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Thomas Greiss go here for the Sharks who isn’t a bad option between the pipes either.
Carolina is beginning to turn the page on their otherwise disappointing season as they have won back to back contests but they still have a ways to go before they can be considered playoff contenders. The Canes are one of those fringe teams that will likely be in the mix come playoff time but will likely end up being a little short of the postseason and a little too good for a top draft pick which can be just as frustrating as not making the playoffs at all. The Canes do have a decent group up front and they do get Cam Ward back in this one but to expect the Sharks to have back to back losses isn’t something I want to bet on and with the way they played last night a bounce back effort is certainly in order before the weekend.
