The Florida Panthers wer heavy underdogs on Saturday night when they went into Joe Louis Arena and found a way to steal a win. The Panthers were taking on a Detroit Red Wings club that has been hit with some injuries and Florida was able to take advantage and give us a big winner in this one. Florida outshot Detroit 37-23 in the game and got big saves from Tim Thomas when needed as the veteran netminder picked up his eighth win of the year. Trailing 1-0 after the first period the Panthers came out and dominated in the second, outshooting Detroit 17-5 in the period. Jimmy Hayes evened the score with his third goal of the year and early in the third period it was Jonathan Huberdeau with the game winning goal. It was Huberdeau's seventh of the season and the Panthers would hold on for a 2-1 victory. The Panthers are a young club that has a lot of issues but they have worked extremely hard since the coaching change and all of the players were put on notice by the general manager. Sunday night's tilt will go a long way for some of these players if they can prove that they belong when on the ice with a club that's as good as the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks enter this one surprisingly enough on a three game losing streak. All of the losses have come by a single goal by Chicago has had a little bit of trouble keeping their puck out of the net as of late. Ben Smith and Kris Versteeg scored for Chicago on Friday night against the Anaheim Ducks but this one would go to a shootout and Antti Raanta was unable to stop either of the Ducks shooters that he faced as Chicago fell by a final of 3-2. The Blackhawks just haven't been their sharpest lately, so look for them to get back on track in this one. This would normally be a game where the Blackhawks could be looking ahead but with their recent losing streak it's hard to imagine them not wanting to come out and really take it to the Panthers here. Florida has played much better of late but this is a really challenging spot for a young club like the Panthers on Sunday night.
