The Tampa Bay Lightning travel to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks on Saturday night.
Defense will be the biggest factor for the Lightning this season and they’ll get a test right away against the defending Stanley Cup Champions. We know that this club has the ability to score goals, especially on the power play with Steven Stamkos and rifling lasers and Martin St. Louis setting people up left and right. After multiple trades to try and acquire a goaltender it’s still not clear whether Steve Yzerman has found his man in Ben Bishop or Anders Lindback. The Lightning will need to support whichever goalie is back there with a more defense oriented team system. They’re going to score goals but how many times did we see this club score three or four times last season and lose? It’s something that just can’t happen if you want to be competitive in this league.
Chicago showed us their high powered offense in their season opener on Tuesday night as they defeated the Washington Capitals 6-4. This team is still loaded with talent up front but it will be interesting to see how Corey Crawford perform without Ray Emery behind him spelling him. Crawford looked shaky on Tuesday night but there were a lot of big goalies around the league that got off to a slow start. These new pad changes are going to take a little while for some of these guys to figure out. Expect Chicago to just be too much in the end for a Lightning club that’s got to learn a lot of new system changes.
