The Colorado Avalanche look to secure their first win of the season as they play their home opener against the Dallas Stars on Saturday.
The Stars head into Denver on Saturday looking to build on their impressive season opening win against the Anaheim Ducks as they face off against the Avs who are playing their season opener and could have a bit of early rust. The Stars are one of the top teams in the West this season and regardless of where they are playing they are going to be able to score goals as they have a potent offense led by Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. Dallas will turn back to Antii Niemi who got the win against the Ducks in his season opener after allowing just two goals and accumulating a .943 save percentage and he will be countered by Semyon Varlamov who returns as the go to guy in the Colorado crease.
The Avalanche look for a better season this time around after falling short of the playoffs last season and with the lineup they have they should be able to at least challenge for a postseason spot in the competitive Pacific division. Colorado is led up front by Matt Duchene, Nathan Mackinnon, and Gabriel Landeskog and are joined alongside by a few other key pieces and do have Tyson Barrie chipping in from the point and on special teams but there is still a lot of uncertainty with this group and that could be bad news against a solid team like Dallas. Former head coach Patrick Roy abruptly resigned as the team’s head coach, leaving the team in disarray and we will see if there is any residual impact from this fiasco as the team starts the season.
The Stars are 5-1 in their last six Saturday games, 4-1 in their last five road games, and 2-5 in their last seven following a win while the Avs are 1-11 in their last 12 against the Central, 0-5 in their last five home games, and 0-5 in their last five against the West. I am a believer in this Avs side and think they are better than people are giving the credit for. However, I like the Stars even more and think they get another victory to start the season in Denver on Saturday night.
