The Colorado Avalanche look to stay red hot as they welcome the Los Angeles Kings to town in a pivotal show down on Thursday night.
The Kings look to snap out of their funk against Central division opponents as they face off against an Avalanche team who is a spitting image of themselves as the teams have basically identical records and are both fighting for a wild card spot in the Western Conference. Los Angeles comes into tonight’s contest with a 5-2 mark in their last seven road games and they have gone 9-3 in the last 12 meetings against the Avalanche which puts them in a good position here as the season is drawing near a close and points are ever so important at this point in the race. Los Angeles has a bit more focus in the defensive zone than the Avalanche and that will likely be their strategy coming in here and after games in which they score two or fewer they have rallied nicely and they will be out to keep that trend going in this spot.
The Avalanche meanwhile have won five of their last six games and have been red hot on home ice with a 17-5 stretch in their last 22 games and with the playoffs just around the corner they know that each matchup is important, but those against other playoff hopefuls mean that much more. Colorado was left for dead in some eyes after they dealt Matt Duchene but they have been anything but as they look like a serious threat to go on a run in the Western Conference and a statement victory at home here against the Kings would certainly put the rest of the league on notice if they aren’t aware already.
The Kings are 7-1 in their last eight after scoring two or fewer in their previous game and 1-4 in their last five against the Central while the Avs are 8-2 in their last 10 after scoring five or more in their previous game and are 7-19 in their last 26 home games against a team with a winning road record. LA has dominated this series but are on a road trip here and I think they come out flat against a good home side.
