The Sabres continue their misery on the road in Columbus on Friday as they take on one of the league's hottest teams.
The Sabres have been the favourites in the Connor McDavid sweepstakes for the better part of the season and that is unlikely to change over the course of the weekend as they wrap up the regular season with two games, the first of which comes tonight against Columbus. Buffalo has been historically bad for the majority of the season but heading into the year they didn't have a ton of expectations as their roster was incredibly thin and the message was made clear that they are building for the future. The Sabres landed Sam Reinhart in last year's draft and combining him with whomever they end up getting in this year's draft will be a solid foundation for the team moving forward as both McDavid and Jack Eichel are generational talents and should mirror the dual on ice-off ice success we saw with Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin.
The Blue Jackets have been a bit of a disappointment this season as many had them pegged for a playoff run in the East this season and while they have been lights out over the last two weeks it is a little too late for them to qualify for a wild card spot. Columbus is a good team that can get even better with a few moves in the off season and with a clean bill of health from goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky who was sidelined for a large portion of the season which certainly played a role in Columbus' underachieving. However, as winners of 9 of 10 the Jackets are red hot, coming off a win against the Maple Leafs in which they blanked them by a 5-0 final, and will look to go into the off season with momentum. Columbus rolls.
