The Montreal Canadiens look to improve on their dismal effort on the road this season as they head into Columbus to face off with the Blue Jackets on Monday.
The Canadiens come into Monday night’s show down with the Blue Jackets sitting 15 points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and while they are not mathematically eliminated from the postseason they are in deep trouble and have been playing like a doormat for the better part of two months. Montreal sold off some pieces at the trade deadline and with Carey Price still out indefinitely with a concussion it is safe to say that Montreal will not have a shot at winning the Stanley Cup this season and a road trip to face off against a Jackets side that has won four in a row and is 7-3 in their last 10 games it looks as though they are in deep trouble again. Montreal is expected to send Antti Niemi to the crease here as he will face off against Sergei Bobrovsky who will look to guide the Jackets back to the Eastern Conference playoffs.
The Jackets are hitting their stride at the right time and a large part of their success can be attributed to their play on home ice and with the Canadiens in town on Monday who have an absolutely miserable record away from home it looks like this one is lined up to be another blow out. Columbus is 5-2 in their last seven meetings with the Canadiens and the home team has dominated this series which indicates why the Jackets are such a heavy favourite in this spot and a 4-1 stretch in their last five games following a win doesn’t hurt either as Montreal is just 8-25 in their last 33 on the road and this spot doesn’t appear like it is going to end very well for them.
The Canadiens are 6-14 in their last 20 playing on one day’s rest and 7-19 in their last 26 overall while the Jackets are 4-0 in their last four overall and 51-25 in their last 76 home games. Montreal is miserable and while Columbus is a bit inconsistent to lay the juice here it is the only play to make.
