The Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets meet up in Ohio on Friday night as both teams look to continue their push for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Flyers continue to deal with the injury bug and now begin life without Brian Elliott who will likely be out for the next month or so and will now turn to Michal Neuvirth who has shown bouts of brilliance throughout his career and is more than capable of leading this Flyers group to the playoffs in the Metro division. The Flyers face off against the Blue Jackets in a pivotal divisional show down on Friday night but they come in as huge underdogs as the oddsmakers are really looking into Philly’s goaltending situation and are giving a massive edge to former Flyers goaltender and two time Vezina winner Sergei Bobrovsky. Philly is 1-5 in their last six Friday games but have won four of their last five overall and in a matchup here against the Jackets who have dropped six of their last eight and their last four Friday night games the Flyers should be more than competitive.
The Jackets head into this one battling some inconsistency and have gone from a dark horse in the Eastern Conference to a team struggling to stay in the playoff hunt but they have been brilliant in response to a blowout loss as they have won nine in a row after a loss of three goals or more. Columbus has dominated this series as well as they have won a staggering 14 of their last 17 meetings with their division rivals including 11 in a row at home which is a terrible trend for the visitors who seem like world beaters one night and doormats the next.
The Flyers are 5-2 in their last seven road games and 2-5 in their last seven against the East while the Jackets are 3-7 in their last 10 against a team with a losing record and 2-6 in their last eight overall. Philly needs to keep winning but they are in tough here as the jackets will be playing desperate hockey and to me they have the edge in goal and that is the difference here.
