The Jets look to shake off a two game slide with a win on Tuesday night as they head into Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets who currently sit in last place in the Metropolitan division.
The Winnipeg Jets were one of a few teams that prognosticators were undecided on as many thought they could push through into the playoffs this season while others figured they would float around the Western Conference basement and in the running for a top draft pick. Despite the season still being quite young these Jets look like they have the makeup of a playoff contender and have had a very nice start to the year where the first and ultimate goal is to put themselves in a position to comete for a Stanley Cup but they are tapered with expectation as well and know how strong the Western Conference is. The Jets could find themselves as big time players on the trade market as bringing in another piece up front could push them over the edge but deciding whether or not they can afford to move some young pieces for short term success is something management will have to decide and only if the team can get into a spot where those decisions become necessary. Ondrej Pavelec is expected to get the start as he will go up against Sergei Bobrovsky for the Jackets.
Columbus hasn't had the fairy tale start many expected at the beginning of the season as they find themselves in the basement of the Metro division and are tied with the Oilers and the Sabres for the worst mark in hockey only accumulating 14 points thus far. The Jackets were in the playoffs a season ago but haven't looked the part so far this year and I think it is a huge stretch to expect them to make a charge towards a wild card spot despite the Metro being the weakest division in all of hockey. Columbus has been ugly on home ice sporting a 3-6-1 mark through their first 10 games and while the Jets are usually known for being a strong home side they have actually played much better on the road this season and I think they continue that streak in this one. The Jackets are in turmoil and while the Jets can be a little dysfunctional at time I actually like them more than most this season and I think they get it done here tonight.
