The Stars look to stay alive as the series shifts back to Dallas while the Western Conference leaders from Anaheim can wrap up the series on the road.
The Ducks finally made a statement in these playoffs that warrants them as a top seed in the Western Conference and a Stanley Cup contender as they exploded in the third period of game five to put them in a position to wrap up their series with the Stars. Anaheim hadn’t had an overly impressive victory yet in the postseason despite taking two of four from the Stars through the first swing of home games and now they can build on that momentum and get some rest before a potential second round match up with the Sharks or Kings. The Ducks aren’t overly deep up front but they do have a lot of top end talent led by Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry and as it has been all season the Ducks top guys got the job done when it mattered most. Frederik Andersen responded with a nice effort in game five after being shelled by the Stars in both games in Dallas and he will likely get the nod once again here as he aims to win his first career NHL playoff series.
The Stars were the last team to qualify for the postseason and while some look at that as a reason why they were heavy underdogs coming into their series with Anaheim you have to consider the fact that they were playing playoff type games for the final two weeks of the regular season. For this reason I believe the Stars were more adequately prepared for this series than most people anticipated and if they can grab another home ice victory here and force a deciding game seven it is safe to say they would be thrilled. Jamie Benn has been a force in this series and he notched a memorable shorthanded goal in game five’s loss after stick checking a nonchalant Getzlaf at the Anaheim blue line and if the Stars are going to extend the series they’ll need another stellar effort from their captain. Unfortunately, I think this is the end of the road for Dallas’ impressive season as it appears the Ducks woke the beast on Friday night and I’m afraid that now they have a ton of momentum and will put an end to this series.
