The Flames and Stars do battle in Dallas on Monday in a show down between two teams desperate for a win and looking to make the playoffs.
The Calgary Flames notched a huge win on the road in Nashville as they thwarted the Central division leaders by a 5-2 final and jumped back into third place in the division in the process and can extend that lead with another win here against the Stars. Calgary has the worst schedule of all the remaining contenders in the Western Conference playoff race but they aren't going away quietly and despite the pessimism outside the dressing room they are making a case to be a playoff team. Calgary currently holds a one point lead on LA for the third and final automatic spot in the Pacific division bracket and the spot in the postseason will likely come down to the final whistle as a handful of deserving teams duke it out for a spot in hockey's second season.
The Stars have come along frantically over the last few weeks and have turned a disappointing seaosn into a possible playoff berth and while they still have some leg work to do they are in a position to grab a wild card spot. Dallas sits six points out heading into tonight and if they can get a win and the Jets lose they will be within four five games remaining and they too will add their name to the rolodex of teams competing for a Western Conference playoff spot. Dallas is 8-2 in their last 10 games and in this spot I actually like them quite a bit as they have the offense that is a complete 180 from Nashville and I think that change of pace will be enough to get the Stars a big time win and fulfill the let down spot for Calgary.
