The Stars look to continue their surge atop the NHL standings as they head into Raleigh to battle the Hurricanes on Tuesday night.
The Dallas Stars have been one of the league’s biggest surprises this season as they have gone from a playoff fringe team to the league's best over the course of the off season and if they can maintain this torrid pace they will lock up the President's Trophy as the best regular season group. Dallas added some major pieces in the off season but to think it would translate this quickly is a bit ambitious yet the Stars are playing with a ton of confidence and guys like John Klingberg and thriving this year and putting up career numbers. The tandem of Kari Lehtonen and Antii Niemi has also worked well as the two Finnish nationals have pushed each other well and while the former is still considered the starter I think they are interchangeable and the team has confidence in playing either. The Stars are 11-2-2 on the road this season and will start Lehtonen tonight while the Canes are 6-6-3 at home and will counter with Cam Ward.
The Canes have taken a bit of a tumble over the last few seasons as they have gone from an up and comer with the likes of Jeff Skinner adding to an existing foundation to a league doormat as things haven't panned out the way they had hoped and while things look bright in the future they have a ways to go before they reach it. Carolina has some prospects in the system and are likely to acquire more this season as many faces could be on their way out of town at the trade deadline as they try and sort out what the future holds and that could mean mainstays like Cam Ward and Eric Staal are wearing other uniforms by season's end. As for tonight, the Stars are in the driver's seat and while there is no value in taking them I would recommend a regulation or puck line play to reduce the juice.
