The Red Wings head back indoors after a Winter Classic shootout loss to the Maple Leafs at the Big House in Ann Arbor on Tuesday as they head to Dallas to face the Stars.
The Wings were part of a very special day for the NHL on Tuesday as they hosted the annual Winter Classic on New Year’s Day before 105,000 people (including yours truly) in what was a once in a lifetime opportunity but was very cold. Detroit dropped a sloppy game by virtue of a 3-2 shootout decision that went the way of the Maple Leafs and now they’ll look to get back in the win column as they head to Dallas to face off against the Stars. Despite the fact that the elements played a large role in their loss to the Leafs the Wings didn’t look very cohesive for the majority of the game and have sustained some injuries to go along with their sluggish play and must cope with the absence of some key components. Jimmy Howard gets the call in goal for the Wings as they head into Frisco to face Kari Lehtonen and the Dallas Stars.
Dallas has played all of its games indoors this season and I’m sure New Year’s Day was a lot warmer in Frisco than in Ann Arbor. The Stars are quietly staying competitive in the Central division as they have just two regulation losses in their last 10 contests and have moved into 4th place in the division only trailing league powers in Chicago, St. Louis, Colorado, and Minnesota. Dallas was very active at last year’s trade deadline and in the offseason as they acquired Tyler Seguin from the Bruins and the former number two overall selection has been brilliant in his first year with the Stars and is playing very well alongside Jamie Benn. Dallas is a team I had pegged to sneak into the playoffs and do some damage and while that is still to be determined I think they have a great shot here at keeping their winning ways intact as I think they match up very well against a struggling Red Wings team.
