The Dallas Stars look to distance themselves in the chase for a playoff spot as they host the New York Rangers to town on Tuesday night.
The Rangers have struggled this season and have fallen from their perch as one of the league’s top franchises over the last few years and at this rate it looks as though they’ll miss out on the postseason. New York is 12 points behing the Montreal Canadiens for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference and an additional point behind the Islanders for the third spot in the Metro and with just 16 games remaining on their schedule things are looking bleak for them, including their matchup on Tuesday against the Stars. Henrik Lundqvist is expected to get the call here as he will face off against Ben Bishop who has been a huge reason why the Stars are in a playoff spot and could very well find himself in the Vezina discussion as the league’s top goaltender at season’s end.
The Stars came into the season as one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup after adding a few pieces in the offseason but they have battled inconsistency and a lackluster offense that was expected to be the cog that moves their engine. Dallas is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record and are 5-2 in their last 7 home games and will host a Rangers team that is a woeful 17-38 in their last 55 road games and are 17-39 in their last 56 games as a road underdog. Dallas and New York have played to the Under in 10 of their last 13 meetings and are 5-0-1 to the under in their last 6 meetings in Dallas and with Bishop getting the nod here that trend figures to continue.
The Rangers are 7-3 in their last 10 Tuesday games and are 2-5 in their last 7 games playing with just a single day of rest while the Stars are 2-6 in their last 8 against the Metro and are 1-4 in their last 5 games following a win. New York is not a great team and while Dallas has had their issues they put it together here for a regulation victory.
