The Blues look for their second win in as many nights as they travel to Dallas to take on the Stars less than 24 hours after defeating the Blackhawks in a shootout.
The Blues are often the subject of many NHL debates surrounding Stanley Cup favourites and whether or not they’re for real or are pretenders and I think with last night’s effort they emphatically answered that question. St. Louis found themselves down early and often to the powerhouse Blackhawks but they showed some resiliency and battled back to force overtime where they ultimately snatched the second point via the shootout. Skeptics will point out that the Blues caught the Hawks in the back end of a doubleheader but good teams know how to win those games and Chicago had ample opportunity to bury the Blues but couldn’t. St. Louis takes to the road to face the Stars who have been playing better than expected this season and with a nice run could very well land a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference.
Dallas is a team that many had projected as a playoff team a year ago but after things didn’t go according to plan they dealt some major pieces at the deadline and made even more in the offseason. The Stars have won two games in a row and are within striking distance of the Wild and Avalanche in the Central division standings but are still a comfortable margin behind the Blues who hold an 11 point advantage heading into tonight’s contest. Tyler Seguin who was the focal point of an offseason move to Dallas has developed instant chemistry with Jamie Benn and the two of them lead an underrated offensive unit that should give the Blues fits here especially in the back end of a double header. Brian Elliott was forced into action against the Hawks yesterday so I don’t imagine he will be at 100% here and I think the Stars have the goaltending edge as Kari Lehtonen has been great this season. Nice spot for the Stars and I’ll take them here at home.
