Tuesday night NHL action features a matchup between the Dallas Stars and the Washington Capitals.
The Washington Capitals began the season looking rather ordinary but at the end of the day the team is sitting atop the Metropolitan. Surging Washington has won eight of ten with both ends of the ice contributing to the success. The Capitals come off of a 3-2, overtime win versus the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday behind a third period rally from a 2-0 deficit.
Anaheim received goals from Derek Grant and Jakob Silfverberg for a 2-0 lead heading to the third while John Gibson made 24 saves in the loss. Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in the third for the Caps with Alex Ovechkin won it on his goal at just under two minutes in to OT. Braden Holtby made 28 stops to help Washington to wins in 10-12.
The Dallas Stars are sitting in 5th in the Central so the short term goal is to begin to move up the standings an solidify a spot in the postseason down the road. Dallas has dropped consecutive contests following a 2-1, overtime defeat at the surging Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night where the offense never got going.
The Stars lone goal game in the first period off the stick of Gemel Smith before Shayne Gostisbehere evened the score on a second period power play tally. Gostisbehere scored the winner at 3:50 of the extra session on another power play off a second assist from Jacub Voracek. Brian Elliott stopped 27 shots to get the win for the suddenly hot Flyers while Ben Bishop made 28 saves for the Stars.
Capitals are 4-0 in their last 4 vs. Western Conference and Capitals are 7-1 in their last 8 overall and Capitals are 5-1 in their last 6 games following a win. Over is 5-0 in Stars last 5 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game and Stars are 5-1 in their last 6 vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and Stars are 10-3 in their last 13 home games. Over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings and Capitals are 4-17 in the last 21 meetings and Capitals are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Dallas.
There has generally been a lot of offensive fireworks when these teams have faced each other so I’m leaning over right now…
