Thursday night NHL action pits the Buffalo Sabres against the Detroit Red Wings.
The Buffalo Sabres are not going to make a miracle second half run to make the postseason because neither end of the ice has been able to sustain winning efforts over the course of the season. Buffalo has dropped three in a row following a 3-2 defeat to Washington with Kyle Okposo and Evander Kane scored third period goals.
The Capitals received scoring from Alex Ovechkin, John Carlson and Evgeny Kuznetsov and led 3-1 with the Sabres scoring with only four seconds remaining. Philipp Grubauer picked up the win for Washington with a 32 save effort while Chad Johnson absorbed the loss with 27 stops.
The Detroit Red Wings are hoping for a return to the postseason but things have not been going their way with losses in three of four following a 3-2 defeat at the hands of visiting Nashville on Wednesday. The Red Wings saw Andreas Athanasiou score in the second with Tomas Tater scoring in the third.
The Predators scoring came off the sticks of Scott Hartnell and Kyle Turris in the opening period before Viktor Arvidsson score the eventual winner in the third. Roman Josi and Ryan Ellis supplied two assists each and Juuse Saros made 34 saves for Nashville. Jimmy Howard absorbed the loss for Detroit with three goals allowed on 29 shots.
Sabres are 2-9 in their last 11 games playing on 2 days rest and under is 4-1 in Sabres last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of less than .400 and under is 4-1 in Sabres last 5 road games. Red Wings are 0-6 in their last 6 Thursday games and under is 4-0 in Red Wings last 4 games playing on 1 days rest and Red Wings are 0-5 in their last 5 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation. Under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings and Sabres are 3-10 in the last 13 meetings in Detroit and under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings in Detroit.
Both teams lose their share of close ones but I’m looking at the Red Wings to get a close win…
