The Blackhawks and Red Wings meet up at the Joe on Wednesday night in a battle of Original Six rivals in the hunt for their respective division titles.
The Chicago Blackhawks head into Detroit on Wednesday looking to distance themselves from the Stars and Blues in the Central division as all three teas currently sit tied with 83 points, with the Hawks holding two games in hand on St. Louis and one on Dallas. The Hawks are currently in the midst of a 5-4-1 stretch in their last 10 contests and haven’t been nearly as strong on the road this season as they have been at the United Center as they are just 16-12-3 on the road compared to a sparkling 23-8-2 mark at home. The Hawks are also in the lead in the Western Conference race and while they will fall short of Washington for top spot in the NHL standings they are in good shape in terms of locking up home ice throughout the Western Conference bracket.
The Red Wings meanwhile face off against an old Western Conference foe that they haven’t seen nearly as much of over the last few seasons since making the jump to the East but there Is still a great rivalry here between two of the game’s first six teams. Detroit is in the hunt in the Atlantic division as they currently sit in fourth place and hold the top wild card spot but are just five points back of the Panthers for first and will certainly be in it until the end. Detroit is 12 games above the .500 mark and are 16-10-6 at home this season and with Petr Mrazek handling the starting duties it puts them in a better position against some of the league’s better offensive teams like Chicago. This should be a great game between two teams looking to make a statement and while the Wings are the more desperate of the two I do think Chicago is the better team and get the win.
